Fountain reference

Title page

The cover page of a screenplay, written as Key: value lines at the top of the script, and how it prints on a page of its own.

On this page

A screenplay opens with a cover page: the title, who wrote it, and how to reach them. In Fountain it is the first lines of the script, each one a key, a colon and a value, with a blank line after the last one.

INT. FERRY CABIN - NIGHT

A narrow bunk. The engine hums.

How it prints

Writing one in Calmly Script

Type a title page key at the start of the very first line, for example Title:, and the line becomes a title page line. Enter↩ then keeps you on the title page, one line per entry. As you type on a title page line, the app suggests the keys it knows, in grey; TabTab accepts the suggestion.

To leave the title page, press Enter↩ on an empty line: it turns into action, and your screenplay starts there.

The title page can only be at the top of the script, and it has to start with a key the app knows. A line such as Maria: finally home further down, or even on the first line, is not a title page: it stays what it is. That is also why the title page is not in Format › More elements: a line becomes one by what it says and where it is, not by being chosen.

The keys

Key Where it prints
Title: centred, in capitals and underlined
Credit:, Author: (or Authors:), Source: centred, under the title
Draft date:, Date:, Contact:, Notes:, Copyright:, Revision: in a block at the bottom left
Type: nowhere: it is the document type (Format › Document type…)

Credit: is the line between the title and the author, such as Written by. Source: is what the script is based on.

Once the title page has started, any Key: value line is an entry of its own, even with a key the app does not know; entries with other keys print in the bottom-left block. Keys are not case sensitive, and Calmly Script recognises the keys of every language it speaks (Título:, Autor:, Titre: …), so a title page written in another language stays a title page.

Entries on more than one line

An entry whose value runs to several lines, such as an address, has the key alone on its line and each line of the value indented under it. That is how Contact: is written in the example at the top.

On a title page line that has another one above it, TabTab indents the line and Shift+Tab⇧Tab takes the indent off. Everywhere else the indent is Ctrl+Tab⌥Tab (Format › Indent line) and Ctrl+Shift+Tab⌥⇧Tab (Format › Remove indent). The first line of the title page is the exception, because an indented first line would belong to no entry: there, Tab changes the line to action as it does on any other line, and that ends the title page, so the lines under it become action too.

The script’s name

A screenplay with a title page is called by its Title:: it is the name in the title bar, and the name offered when you save it for the first time. A script without one is called by its first line.

How it prints

The title page prints on a page of its own, before the first page of the script. The title, credit, author and source are centred in the upper part of the page; the other entries sit at the bottom left, lined up with the left margin of the script. Emphasis on the title page prints as it does anywhere else, and notes on it do not print.

A line of === ends the title page, the same as a blank line; see Page breaks.
