Writing

Notes as you write

Leaving yourself notes in the script with double brackets, tagging them so they stand out, and finding them again.

On this page

A note is a reminder in the middle of the script: check this date, too long?, call back to the diner. In Calmly Script a note is written in the text itself, between double square brackets, where it belongs. It is shown in colour on screen and never printed.

What you type

JUNE
I've never been to Lisbon. [[She has. Act two.]]

How it prints

Writing one

  • Type the two opening brackets, [[. The closing ones appear by themselves, with the caret between.
  • Or choose Edit › Insert Note. With nothing selected, it opens an empty note, [[]], with the caret inside. With some text selected, it puts the brackets around it.

To stop something being a note, delete a bracket. There is nothing else to it: the brackets are the note.

A note can sit on its own line or in the middle of one. A line that is only a note disappears from the printed page, and one inside a line of dialogue or action leaves the rest of the line as it was.

Tags

Start a note with a word and a colon, and that word is its tag:

[[Todo: shorten this speech]]
[[Research: tide times in October]]

Every note with the same tag is drawn in the same colour, in every script, so the Todo notes stand out from the Research ones. There are five colours; the app picks one for each tag. To choose it yourself, name the tag after the colour: [[Red: …]], [[Orange: …]], [[Green: …]], [[Blue: …]] or [[Purple: …]].

Finding them again

The Outline (View › Table of contents) lists every note under the scene it is in, with its colour, so you can see what is left to do and jump to it. See The Outline.

In the file

A note is part of the text of the .fountain file, brackets and all, so it travels with the script and other Fountain apps read it as a note too. When you export to Final Draft (File › Export › Final Draft (.fdx)), each note becomes a Final Draft script note.

The syntax, and its neighbour the boneyard (/* … */, for text you want to switch off without deleting it), are in Notes and boneyard.
